My HARTLEY Family Tree
My HARTLEY Family Tree starts [ so far ] with two William HARTLEY families:
William HARTLEY [1] b.abt.1790, thought to have been born at Blackburn or Colne area, a Weaver later a Mechanic. I believe he was married to Betty though not confirmed. Their son John HARTLEY was b.abt.1818 at Blackburn lived in Lees Street, Ancoats [1851 Census]. Another son may have been William HARTLEY also found on the 1851 Census in Manchester.
William
HARTLEY [2] b.abt.1795, thought to have been born at Manchester, a Weaver
later a Mechanic , of Bennett Street, Ancoats area of Manchester. Married
to Mary NUTTALL. In the 1841 Census record, brothers John [b.1820]
Richard [b.1825] James [b.1830] and Henry HARTLEY [b.1835]
were living without parents at Lees Street, Ancoats. I believe their mother
may have died in the late 1830's and that their father William [and possibly
Mary, also] had been transported to Australia as convict/s.William and Mary
likely had another son named William but he was not with theother sons on the
1841 Census record. James [aged 10] and Henry [aged 5] were next
placed in the Workhouse but James escaped. James eventually married
in Manchester and emigrated to the USA in the 1870's. Henry ltravelled
to Australia in the 1840's to search for his father but returned to Manchester
and later married and lived in Pendleton, Salford. Richard married Margaret
FANNAN in 1849 and lived in Ancoats and later Salford. I believe Richard
and his son Charles were both in Dartmoor Prison on the 1871 Census.
In the 1861 Census Charles is living at an Inn, aged 11, so had probably
run away from home. Charles was an Inmate at two other Prisons in 1881
and 1891 for Theft. Richard was more usually employed as a Metal Planer.
This side of my HARTLEY family had links with the BURNS family [Burns
sisters both married/lived with Fredrick ENGELS of Marx/Engels fame]
John HARTLEY [b.1818] married Mary Ann DEACON
in 1842 at Manchester Cathedral.
John and Mary Ann's son, James HARTLEY [b.1854] pictured below

was
born in Ancoats, Manchester. James married Margaret HARTLEY, the
daughter of Richard HARTLEY [b.1825] and Margaret FANNAN.
Throughout the 1800's, most of the male members of the family were Iron Workers,
Engineers or Mechanics. James eventually moved to the Collyhurst area
of Manchester working in the submarine turbines industry, moving for a few years
to Derby, Derbyshire [1880's] then back to Miles Platting, Manchester, then
Chadderton, Oldham [1890's].

James HARTLEY's Family Tree Chart]
In the early 1900's, they moved to the Midlands to work in the newer turbines,
aero and motor car industries.
Members of my family are now as far a field as the USA, Canada, Australia, the
Middle East and the Far East. In the UK, they can be found in Blackpool, Manchester,
Cheshire, Leeds, the North, the Midlands, London, and the Home Counties.
